Hayfield 18th February 2007 Ride Review

Well done to the 11 riders who turned out on what was a memorable days outing. Riders out were Capt M, Old, Pretty, Carrot, Clone, Tyre kicker, DaveH, Dave from warrington, Nobby, Andy and Santa cruz.

We start the rides review with an intellectual question ? Do the Woollybacks need such sophisticated equipment for example: navigational aids, GPS technology and Sat Nav to get them round the most isolated areas of the Peak district. Answer: definitely not ! Another question then, does Nobby need such equipment to navigate out of Lymm services ? Answer: a resounding yes ! Whilst 9 of the troop set out for a wonderful days outing, Nobby and co-driver Andy decided the Peak district had been relocated to Birmingham and merrily set of down the M6 whilst the other 9 riders preferred the direct route via the M56.

Nobby’s minor diversion meant that 9 riders set off from Hayfield with a long hard road climb and fabulous off road descent whilst the Capt and Old waited for the “Real Lost Sheep” who rendezvoused with us some 30 minutes later. Suffice to say it was there loss and our gain as the 8 of the 9 riders watched our own Santa Cruz have an RTA with a herd of sheep. Wolves in sheep clothing, you bet! Poor little mint sauce didn’t know what had hit him and for all to see as Clone just happened to be on hand with the video camera. No use “Bleeting” about it Santa, your in the hall of fame and also a contender for 2007 stack of the year.

Further footage recorded, showed the magnitude of this ride, some great climbing was encountered and most found themselves pushing at one point or another throughout the ride. Old was on terrific form and as many fell at Beachers brook ( a steep and boggy part of the climb), the 68 year old showed us how to master the art of steady peddling. Smiling past the camera only to say, “turn the bloody thing off now” where’s the ECG equipment and oxygen mask!.

In total a 17 mile ride, that felt more like 25.
So all in all a good day was had, topped with a fine turnout in the local pub who incidently had lots of Lamb on the menu. Santa ?

Happy riding Clone!
