Thought I'd blog my attempt to run a 10k, or as I like to say, half a half marathon.
The date for the StHelens 10k is early March and a non cycling friend has pursuaded me to have a go.
I read the Run Fat Boy Run thread and thought I'd follow the Couch to 5k format hoping that my cycling fitness will help me reach the 10k distance in the same training period.
I downloaded and printed the regime, bought a pair of trainers and intended to start this morning at 6am.
I overslept !!
I missed my first target which was simply "starting" !
I took another look at the shoes bought and spotted a flaw so, in a way, did myself a favour. Shoes going back, new ones ordered and a warm up run planned for Saturday morning using my old shoes.
Bet ya can't wait can ya!

Off the saddle and on me feet.... Running
Collapse
On Sunday, armed with a proper survey wheel and my single speed, I marked an accurate 5km circuit from home with notes where the key (every 500m) points are. I ran this last night completing in 25:06 my second best time (best was the first 5k of the 10k event where I did 24:47 according to Strava).
The running is also getting easier and I'm feeling that I could go faster if the mood took me (something not experienced before). It's also becoming more enjoyable especially the "high" at the end.
Strava has come in for a lot of flak lately but I think it's a great tool especially for keeping records of my workouts. It seems to suffer when too many turns are made and last nights run even saw my sat lock lost for over half a mile so it really is swings and roundabouts hence me marking a proper route for timing. The intention is to mark a 10k next and try and do that at least once a week so I can enter the Liverpool Tunnel 10k jus for hell of running under the Mersey.
At some point I'll get bored I'm sure but if swimming comes along I'll be entering a ruddy triathlon next (where's me trunks).
Cheers for reading (if you've got this far anyway).

I did only my 3rd 5km run in 10 months+ this morning with my ime beng just over 28 minutes.
As I'm entered into the StHelens 10km in less than 2 weeks I need to shave over a minute a mile off my pace if I'm to beat 50 minutes for the 10k time I want.
Any suggestions?
