I'm in the market for a new rear mech, most likely Shimano XT. My current Deore LX is wobbling like an old lady on rollerskates.
Am I right in thinking that the difference between between Shadow and normal is that the Shadow doesn't hang down as low / stick out as much? I've been reading mixed reviews about the Shadows (not Hank Marvin's band), people say they break easily.

I've broken 2 XTR shadows and a Saint shadow, all because they sit so close to the wheel when on the large cog and they end up in the spokes. I know have to concentrate on not being in bottom gear on bumpy terrain.
Not sure how many whacked mechs I've avoided for the same reason though! I think the non shadow mechs do shift better, but I still keep buying shadows! Get an SLX shadow for £35, (probably just as good as an XT) or a non shadow XT for £40 from Merlin.

i've been running a shadow SLX for about 18 months without incident. Great shifting, tough and no reason to pay more. As for the XTR mechs breaking, any mech with carbon on it is asking for trouble.

It's harder to get your rear wheel in and out with a shadow mech.
No difference between Shimano XT and SLX other than finish. Deore version is the same except it doesn't have sealed bearing in the jockey wheels. XTR is just a liablity, they are simply not strong enough.
